Michael A. Mastracci, Attorney at Law

Meet Mike the Lawyer

People often ask me why I chose family law.

The answer isn’t found in a courtroom—it’s found in my own life. I did not really choose it, it chose me.

Like many parents, I experienced the heartbreak, uncertainty, and emotional exhaustion that can come with separation and divorce. When my son, Nicholas, was just two years old, his mother and I separated and became involved in a highly contested custody case. What began as one of the most difficult chapters of my life ultimately became the reason I dedicated so much of my career to helping families navigate theirs.

I understand that custody disputes aren’t just legal matters. They affect your home, your finances, your peace of mind, and, most importantly, your children. I’ve lived through the sleepless nights, the difficult conversations, and the uncertainty about what tomorrow might bring. That experience allows me to offer more than legal knowledge—I offer perspective, empathy, and practical guidance.

My goal is simple: to help parents take what feels overwhelming and make it manageable. Sometimes, that alone, is a win.

I believe that every family deserves to move forward with dignity, clarity, and hope. Even when parents disagree, there are healthier ways to communicate, make decisions, and protect what matters most—the well-being of their children. That belief inspired me to write Stop Fighting Over the Kids: Resolving Day-to-Day Custody Conflict in Divorce Situations, a practical resource designed to help parents reduce conflict and focus on solutions.

A Tradition of Service

I grew up around the practice of law. My father, A. Gus Mastracci, served as an Assistant City Solicitor for the City of Baltimore while maintaining a respected private practice that served generations of families throughout the Baltimore area. From an early age, I learned that practicing law is about much more than knowing statutes and case law. It’s about earning trust, treating people with respect, and standing beside clients during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

Those values continue to guide my practice today.

Experience You Can Trust

I earned my Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) before receiving my Juris Doctor from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1989. Since being admitted to the Maryland Bar, I have represented clients in personal injury, criminal defense, DUI, `traffic matters, workers’ compensation, and family law.

Today, I focus my practice on criminal defense, serious traffic matters, and family law, allowing me to devote my full attention to the areas where I can provide the greatest value. When a matter falls outside my focus, I work closely with a trusted network of professionals and attorneys to ensure my clients receive the right guidance.

Why the Fedora?

People often notice my fedora before anything else.

It represents something I believe is missing in today’s world—old-school professionalism, integrity, and genuine personal service.

I believe in taking the time to listen before speaking. I believe relationships matter. I believe trust is earned through honesty, preparation, and showing up when people need you most.
The fedora isn’t about standing out. It’s a reminder that some values never go out of style.

The classic suit tells the same story. It isn’t about making a statement. It’s about bringing back an old-fashioned commitment to professionalism, preparation, and personal service. In today’s fast-moving world, families often feel like just another case number. I believe you deserve better.

More Than a Lawyer

Over the years, I’ve learned that many people don’t simply need legal advice—they need someone who can help them slow down, organize their thoughts, and make thoughtful decisions during an emotional time. The art of thinking with purpose and being proactive are paramount.

Whether you’re facing a difficult custody dispute, navigating divorce, or trying to protect your relationship with your children, my commitment is to walk alongside you with compassion, experience, and practical guidance.

My role isn’t simply to help you get through court. It’s to help you move beyond the chaos and toward a healthier future. The actual trial is nothing compared to the months and sometimes years of the turmoil leading up to it.

Because there is life after divorce.

And with the right guidance, there is hope beyond the conflict.

Together, we’ll replace confusion with clarity, fear with preparation, and chaos with a plan that helps you move forward one step at a time. Take the next step: www.custodychaos.com

The Personal Stuff

Michael A. MastracciAfter a very short and less than harmonious marriage, I became the first branch on the Mastracci family tree to become separated and divorced. My “main man,” Nicholas, was born in the spring of 1993, and had not yet reached the age of two before his mom and I separated and began one of the most acrimonious custody battles to wreak havoc on the Baltimore County Circuit Court. I only mention this because it was that experience that led to my interest in the area of family law matters and lead me to write my first book: Stop Fighting Over the Kids: Resolving Day-to-Day Custody Conflict in Divorce Situations.

There is life after divorce and as bad as all of that can be for the children of separation and divorce there is a lot that can be done to move forward even when you and the other parent don’t get along. Like many recently separated and divorced people with small children, I had some significant adjustments to make and was often reminded of how much different a parent-child bond is when compared to other interpersonal relationships; kids come first. Probably the best thing I ever did for my then young son was to marry his wonderful stepmom, Deb Cromer. As Nick pointed out, her name is “B. E. D.” spelled backwards. Kids say the darnedest things, don’t they? Amongst her many attributes, Deb, a/k/our Administrative Goddess, is also the office manager at the Mastracci Law Office.
