Ocean City, Maryland: DUI and DWI season is here

This post will not be the typical DUI post. I am not going to discuss how the breath test
works or go into field sobriety tests, or recite the DUI and related laws, procedures and
statutes. Nope, not addressing interlock issues or MVA ramifications.

Call me and we can discuss whatever you need.

Don’t become a statistic!

Did you know that in 2025 Worcester County, Maryland (which includes Ocean City)
logged in 898 impaired-driving arrests with a conviction rate of 90.7 %. While a good
lawyer can sometimes work magic (not guilty for those guilty as sin), most of the time
the cases are worked out by way of proceeding on Not Guilty plea with an “Agreed
Statement of Fact” or a flat-out guilty plea. In either scenario, the outcome will likely be
the same as to the guilty finding. For most first offenders the dispositions will look
similar, unless of course, there are extenuating circumstances, like telling the officer that
he or she has no jurisdiction over you because you are a sovereign citizen or that you
where not driving, but traveling, which is your constitutional right. Basically, cooperate,
be polite and remember that you are being audio and video recorded during the entire
police encounter.

So here is the deal: If you have been drinking, don’t drive. Take an Uber, Lyft, or other ride sharing company. It is much cheaper than a DUI. Not surprisingly, you can purchase portable breathalyzers on Amazon. If you try it, you will be surprised how little alcohol it takes to fail. Educate yourself about alcohol and its effects. I often recommend that my clients take an on-line drug and alcohol awareness course through www.coursesforcourt.com.

Upon completion you will be issued an authentic certificate for presentation in court. While this is serious, if you want a chuckle, take a look at all the different courses that are offered. For example, you can take a course on Theft Awareness & Prevention or even Prostitution Prevention (those might be covered on a future Blog post).

This summer, don’t drink and drive, behave responsibly, and don’t forget sunscreen!

Best Regards,
Mike
